                                                                        Mayor's Thanksgiving Message

As we approach Thanksgiving, we take a moment to look back and then ahead. We remember those that have been lost and those that are sick.  This has been a very difficult year. Many of us are, or feel, isolated, not able to be with our loved ones, something which is particularly difficult at this time of year. But we also look ahead to Thanksgiving and the holidays and the hope that this season brings.

We have much to give thanks for- our health, the health of our families and loved ones and the hope that next year our lives will return to normal. We in Great Neck have much to celebrate as a community. We live in a beautiful area with many resources that we are proud of, our schools, our parks, our proximity to the city, our downtown and the diversity of our community.

Let us give thanks for all of this and let us pledge that we will do our best to help and protect one another- wear masks, practice social distancing, avoid large gatherings and take care of our neighbors and each other.

On November 19, 2020, the CDC issued updated guidance for Thanksgiving.  The CDC’s updated guidance, which may be found at  https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/holidays/thanksgiving.html, begins with this message: “More than 1 million COVID-19 cases were reported in the United States over the last 7 days.As cases continue to increase rapidly across the United States, the safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate at home with the people you live with.Gatherings with family and friends who do not live with you can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu.”

My wife, Nancy, and I, Deputy Mayor Gerry Schneiderman, Deputy Mayor Pam Marksheid, Trustee Lawrence Katz and Trustee Michael DeLuccia urge you to follow the CDC’s guidelines and celebrate Thanksgiving safely.

We wish all of you a very happy and safe Thanksgiving.

Ted Rosen

Recently, New York State has seen an increase in positive COVID-19 diagnoses which has led to clusters in Queens, Brooklyn, and other areas throughout New York State. Unfortunately, there has also been an increasing amount of reported COVID-19 cases in Great Neck as well. We do not want to be the next cluster, and we must to work together to ensure that our community remains vigilant against the spread of COVID-19.

The health and safety of our residents, your families, neighbors, and friends is our top priority, so we want to take this opportunity to once again urge you to adhere to all State-mandated or recommended precautions, including: social distancing (maintaining a six foot distance between you and those not in your household); washing your hands regularly; avoiding touching your face; avoiding large social gatherings and events; and, most importantly, wearing a mask in public whenever you are unable to social distance. These measures have been extremely effec- tive at slowing and preventing the spread of the virus, and we implore you to follow them.

We would also like to make you aware that New York State has launched the new COVID Alert NY app, which allows residents to use your phones in the fight against COVID-19. This important app is part of our continued joint effort to contain the spread and keep New Yorkers informed. The app does not track your GPS location. It uses Bluetooth technology to detect when another phone, with the app, is within six feet. Those with the app on their phone will receive an alert if they have come into contact with someone who has tested positive. More information about the app can be found at: NY.gov/COVIDAlerts.

Additionally, we encourage you to remain vigilant and report any observed social gatherings exceeding 50 indi- viduals, the current limit under New York State law. Large gatherings lead to clusters, which in turn lead to commu- nity spread. You can report these gatherings to Nassau County Police, the Nassau County Fire Marshal or the Village Police, if the gathering is taking place in a Village that has its own police force.

To report a planned gathering or a gathering that is underway please contact:

Nassau County Police:  911
Nassau County Fire Marshal: reopensafe@nassaucountyny.gov
Village of Great Neck Estates Police: (516) 487-7700

Village of Kensington Police: (516) 482-0480
Village of Kings Point Police: (516) 482-1000
Village of Lake Success Police: (516) 482-4600

It is important to remember that we are all in this together, and it is up to each and every one of us to do our part to prevent any further spread of COVID-19 in our community. Again, please follow all social distancing guidelines, wear a mask, and wash your hands. Please stay safe.
